Natural selection favours drought escape and an acquisitive resource‐use strategy in semi‐arid Mediterranean shrubs

Abstract Natural selection is the major force driving adaptive evolution in natural populations, varying strength, direction, and form through space time, especially highly variable environments such as Mediterranean ecosystems. Although a conservative resource‐use strategy has been hypothesized to be taxa, patterns of at intraspecific level, that is, suite traits determining individual fitness, are largely unknown. Using phenotypic experiment semi‐arid conditions, we measured direct indirect acting two different fitness components (survival reproduction), assess value 20 ecophysiological on individuals gypsum endemic species, Centaurea hyssopifolia Helianthemum squamatum , dwelling with contrasting abiotic conditions (south‐ north‐facing slopes) during climatically years (dry mesic). This allowed quantifying magnitude direction spatiotemporal scales. Our results revealed did not alter patterns, being more strongly affected by temporal environmental variation. Selection reproduction indicated consistent for early phenology, low water use efficiency, high specific leaf area, dry matter content, N across slopes both species.
